Fever Pitch by Nick Hornby
Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010I learned a couple of important things from Nick Hornby’s Fever Pitch. First, I’m a lightweight when it comes to sports fanaticism. And second, I need to suffer a lot more before I’m allowed to complain about Liverpool. The first NFL game I remember watching was a Super Bowl over at the Waters’ place. My [...]
Library Stuff
Thursday, October 15th, 2009I had a very nice moment yesterday. I went to the theater last night (Iron Door Playhouse – website coming), where folks are well into rehearsals for Fiddler on the Roof, directed by my wife. I am the lights and sound guy, and it’s time for me to start showing up. I walked in and [...]
Paperback Swap
Thursday, October 8th, 2009This is a short pause to mention that Paperback Swap completely kicks butt. Now, back to the rest of your day. (Thanks to Julie for pointing out its kick-buttitude to me on her blog.)
John W. Campbell on Fantasy
Thursday, August 6th, 2009John W. Campbell, in a letter to L. Ron Hubbard, January 23, 1939: All human beings like wishes to come true. In fairy stories and fantasy, wishes do come true. Adults with childish minds (average “adult” has the mind of a 14 year-old) don’t dare read “fairy stories”, because their minds are afraid to acknowledge [...]

This posted at Susan Dunman’s AudiobookDJ blog – thanks Susan! Star Wars: Outcast by Aaron Allston, read by Marc Thompson. The first in a new [...]
Kindles
Friday, July 17th, 2009I was thinking about buying a Kindle, weighing pros and cons… the NY Times just printed an item for the con column, which is major enough to quash my interest altogether. Seems that when you buy a Kindle eBook, you don’t really own it. Now the trick is to convince my wife that since I [...]

CONduit
Thursday, May 21st, 2009I’m off to the CONduit science fiction convention tomorrow, which is held in Salt Lake City. I attend this con almost every year. The Guests of Honor are: David Farland and Howard Tayler. I’m taking my daughter Alex, who is almost 9 (her words), this year, which means that on off-hours, we’ll be going to [...]
Flashforward
Thursday, May 14th, 2009I have high hopes for this series, which is based on Flashforward, a fine science fiction novel by Robert J. Sawyer. The novel is great on audio – which reminds me. I need to write up a review of that one. It’s available at Audible, soon to be released in hardcopy by Blackstone Audio.
