Review of “Alastair Baffle’s Emporium of Wonders” by Mike Resnick (Hugo Nominee, Novelette)

Wednesday, June 3rd, 2009

I’m convinced that Mike Resnick could make a cost analysis spreadsheet interesting. “Alastair Baffle’s Emporium of Wonders” (Asimov’s, Jan. 2008) seems familiar all the way through, but it really doesn’t matter because Resnick tells a great story and leaves you something to think about. Gold and Silver are the last names of two elderly men [...]

Here’s a local news story on the CONduit convention:

CONduit

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

I’m off to the CONduit science fiction convention tomorrow, which is held in Salt Lake City. I attend this con almost every year. The Guests of Honor are: David Farland and Howard Tayler. I’m taking my daughter Alex, who is almost 9 (her words), this year, which means that on off-hours, we’ll be going to [...]

Flashforward

Thursday, May 14th, 2009

I have high hopes for this series, which is based on Flashforward, a fine science fiction novel by Robert J. Sawyer. The novel is great on audio – which reminds me. I need to write up a review of that one. It’s available at Audible, soon to be released in hardcopy by Blackstone Audio.

Contact (1997)

Friday, May 1st, 2009

Contact (1997) is one of my all-time favorite science fiction movies. I watched it again a couple of nights ago, and find my opinion reinforced. This is a great movie. Ellie Arroway (Jodie Foster) is a brilliant scientist who is driven to spend her time listening to the sky for signals from space. Jena Malone [...]

Isaac Asimov is still one of my favorite writers. LOVE the robot stories. Better go read some…   [via SF Signal]

Stories of Your Life and Others by Ted Chiang

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

I just added a new page called Highly Recommended. This is the first item I’m putting there. Stories of Your Life and Others by Ted Chiang In 1999, Gardner Dozois published the Sixteenth volume of his Year’s Best Science Fiction. I bought a digital copy for Handspring Visor from Peanut Press (now eReader) and started [...]

Sunday Afternoon: Back

Sunday, January 4th, 2009

I had a wonderful holiday. Christmas Day was very nice – it snowed a foot here that day, which is really beautiful when you don’t plan to go out in it. The kids had a great day, I think. After that, we visited my sister and her family for a couple of days (thanks Traci). [...]

“Article of Faith” by Mike Resnick

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

Mike Resnick has a way of revealing truths about ourselves that are often uncomfortable. That they are truths and that he can present them so well in fiction is why I like his writing so much. The Kirinyaga series of stories, “The 49 Antarean Dynasties”, and “Seven Views of Olduvai Gorge” are three of my [...]
